What version of Internet Explorer is this? From the original post:
Could it be a very old one with the MS JVM in it?

In c:\Program Files\Java are both jre6 and jdk 1.6.0_21
Firefox has three plugsins for Java:
Java Deployment Tookkit 126.96.36.199 (disabled)
Java Deployment Tookkit 188.8.131.52 (disabled)
Java (TM) Platform SE6 U21 184.108.40.206 (enabled)
After loading MS Updates on 14 October, applets from two quite different websites gave me a message that "the digital signature was generated with a trusted certificate but has expired". The certificate details included "Issuer CN=VeriSign Class 3 Code Signing 2001-4". Updating Java made no difference but uninstalling and reinstalling Java seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for the info, groupboard.
