    Renaming java.exe to myprog.exe - please help

    807553
      Hello

I would like to know if there is a way to rename java.exe to myprog.exe in the Task Manager. I have a couple of questions regarding the same issue on the Community Discussions. I myself have posted similar questions on various forums. But not a single solution has been received. Many people have tried to provide different ways, but none work. Is there no one who has a solution to this problem?? Is this problem impossible to solve? I mean when we look at the problem it seems so easy - then why is getting a solution for it so difficult?

I will really appreciate if anybody can please help & once & for all put an end to this problem. Let me repeat the question for clarity. When we run any java app the tast managewr always shows java.exe. How do you make the task manager show myprog.exe instead of java.exe?

I hope that atleast this time I will find a solution to this. I am offering 5 duke dollars for a correct solution to this problem.

      Thanks.

There is a program (JET) which compiles java code to an executable. After this, you can startup your program with myprog.exe. I guess, it will be under that name within the taskmanager then.

You can download JET at this webaddress: http://excelsior-usa.com/jet.html

Thanks for your reply. I think the product which you have informed about will do the job. But the biggest problem is that one needs to buy the product. Is there any free stuff which will do the same thing. Or is there any way programatically (Java or native) to do this?

Its not that easy. If java.exe is renamed it does not work. Try it.

Yes it does - I have. You will need to make sure you get the right exe - it may be in the Windows directory.

This is a quite serious suggestion, and very much cheaper than JET. Just copy the Java.exe into your project directory (it's only 24KB for goodness sake), and rename it. Then invoke it. It really does work!

I have once used it and I didn't pay for it. I can't remember whether I used a crack or downloaded a trial version Good luck with it!

Ok I tried it. It works. But is there any other solution to this problem?? I talked with a couple of colleagues & they suggest that renaming java.exe is not a very good idea.

                      Please help!!

I'm pretty certain there is not another way. Windows Task manager is always going to show the name of the actual process. And I absolutely concur that it's a very bad idea to rename java.exe (Hack alert!)

You have a good solution to your problem, but you don't think that it is a good Idea. You did not say why it is not a good idea.

Perhaps you could tell us what the problems with it are.

I think that what you have is not a technical problem, but instead a problem of office politics.

Why would renaming the file be a good idea? It would just serve to confuse the crud out of anyone who came along and saw the renamed file and wondered what it was. It probably also violates licensing agreements. And it's just plain hack-ish to do that. Tell us why it would be so good? Just because it "works" (at least with that particular version anyway - may fail on an updated JVM - it's not documented to be support renaming is it?) There are alot of programs and ideas that "work" but are very poorly designed.

I should clarify - I was not seriously suggesting that you rename the java.exe in the system directory (not after brief consideration, anyway).

But is there really any reason why you can't simply copy it, and rename the copy? I tried that, and it works fine. It has the effect you want, and the exe is tiny. What's the problem?

Kay - some good points there - the poster did not specify the level of robustness required. Many major apps ship with a JRE anyway, which sidesteps the reliability issue. You could also make a new exe that launches the JRE java.exe, although obviously that results in both java.exe and myprog.exe showing up in the process list. You could create an exe that duplicates the function of java.exe (it's obviously just a launcher), which should sidestep the licensing issues I think - probably the best solution overall, but involving significantly more effort.

All I want is an alternate solution to the renaming business. There is no office politics or anything like that involved in it. If you do not have a solution its ok - but atleast do write stuff which makes no sense (like office politics).

                                  HELP!!

Why do you want to do this???? If it is java.exe does it matter?

You should be worried about it working!!!
