T2000 ALOM e-mail alerts sent from invalid address - any suggestions?

      Hi all,

I have a Sun Fire T2000 running Solaris 10 8/09 with firmware release 6.6.1 (ALOM version 1.6.1) and am trying to configure the system controller e-mail alerts mechanism described in the documentation. I have set the mgt_mailhost, mgt_mailalert and if_emailalerts parameters, and this is causing e-mails to be generated on events as required.

However, during the SMTP conversation the server specifies an invalid 'from' address containing the SC's IP in square brackets, e.g.
      MAIL FROM: alom-alert@[172.16.6.10]
This causes some normally-configured mail servers (e.g. Sendmail, Exchange) to respond that the sender e-mail address is invalid, and refuse to accept the e-mail for delivery, meaning that notifications do not get through and the feature is unusable.

From some investigation online it seems that the ALOM is supposed to use the system's hostname after the 'alom-alert@' part of the e-mail address, but for some reason on this T2000 it is unable to do so. The documentation refers to an ALOM configuration variable, sys_hostname but this is always empty, whether the OS is running or not, and cannot be changed manually:
      sc> showsc sys_hostname

      sc> setsc sys_hostname test
      Error: Invalid configuration parameter
      sc>
The hostname is set correctly in /etc/nodename, /etc/hosts, etc. and is displayed correctly at all times in Solaris itself - it just seems to be unavailable to the ALOM, and perhaps because of this it is generating an invalid 'from' address for notifications. That's my theory anyway - can anyone back this up or offer any suggestions?

      Many thanks in advance.

Correction: the alom-alert@[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] e-mail address format is not 'invalid' as I mistakenly claimed - it's defined (although discouraged) in RFC822 as a 'domain literal'.

Whichever way, MS Exchange considers it invalid so the notifications won't get through at our site. I'm still hoping Sun can provide a solution to this problem which currently undermines an otherwise very useful feature.

Hi, I got the same problem even when I use sendmail on the SMTP server. The mail alert did not go through for some reason. The snoop output only shows

I have the same problem with 6 T2000:
              Sun-Fire-T2000 System Firmware 6.3.12 2008/04/06 15:49
              Host flash versions:
              Hypervisor 1.3.4 2007/03/28 06:03
              OBP 4.25.12 2008/03/23 13:27
              POST 4.25.12 2008/03/23 13:52
It seems the mail-server does really not accept "MAIL FROM: alom-alert@[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]"
              sc> showsc sys_hostname ####
              #### empty
              sc> setsc sys_hostname test
              Error: Invalid configuration parameter
SUN EXPERTS ... PLEASE FIX IT ASAP !
I have no problems with Sun Fire V440, and V240 with the same mailserver and identical mail-configuration !

                I also have the problem.

                  it works for me:
                  sc> showhost
                  Sun-Fire-T2000 System Firmware 6.4.6 2007/06/24 18:43

Please Sun fix this!!!! It's doing my head in. I finally got some T5220's updated and they now do email alerts correctly.

I just upgraded T2000 ALOM's to latest as well:

                    sc> showhost
                    Sun-Fire-T2000 System Firmware 6.7.0 2008/12/11 14:54

                    Host flash versions:
                    OBP 4.30.0 2008/12/11 12:15
                    Hypervisor 1.7.0 2008/12/11 13:43
                    POST 4.30.0 2008/12/11 12:41

But the setup of the hostname still fails:

                    sc> setsc sys_hostname testhost
                    Error: Invalid configuration parameter

"Me too" posts don't actually accomplish anything.

These are user-to-user community forums. Though there are occasional Oracle employees that respond, they do so as individuals and not as company representatives. The forums are NOT a way to get TechSupport. You would need to use your warranty or service contract credentials and open a Service Request (SR) if you want to contact TechSupport.

... and as far as your T2000 is concerned?
It went EOL in late 2009, before Oracle bought Sun. You would need a valid contract covering that specific chassis to get any help.
