There is a sun blade 2000 workstation in our lab.And my teacher ask me to install a Linux OS instead of the Solaris8 which is preinstalled in this machine. This thing is very difficult to me,for I am not only a new to Linux, but also a totally freshman to Sun OS and its Hardware.
I have only installed a Fedora 11 in my x86 machine. But i dont know how the sparc architecture working and how to start my installation, even include how and where to boot from installation CD.
Please tell me what the step of installation and how to do.Furthemore, please recommend a Linux distribution suitable for the blade 2000.
Thank you very much.
You can try to install the [newest OpenSolaris|http://opensolaris.org/os/downloads/] there. Or if you need Linux in particular, [Debian distribution|http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst] for example can be installed on SPARC machines. (Choose SPARC option when downloading either one).
OpenSolaris presently can't be installed on SPARC platform using bootable LiveCD, so you'll need to perform network installation (auto install) if you choose it. Debian also can be installed using network install if CD installation fails on your Sun Blade.
If you never ever worked with Linux then Debian is not really the OS you want to choice first, don't get me wrong its very good, but i think Ubuntu which is based on it is more user friendly
Ubuntu has also a Sparc version and a forum for Sun Sparc users.
some issues related to the type of server you have : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=588088
Then you have also the question if you want to install the server edition or the desktop version?
for example dapper server is available here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/dapper/daily/current/dapper-server-sparc.iso
thanks above all
i have downloaded a debian iso and burn it into a dvd
when i press stop+A and boot cdrom,it begins the debian installation.
when the step comes to detect hard disk, however,it failed.
no matter whatever disk driver i choose from the list,it doesn't work.
i dont understand why the solaris8 on the machine can recognize the hard disk and use it normally, but the debian can not?
Then what should I do to pass it?
You should try the debian forums for that, as i already mentioned not the easiest for a non linux user.
Aurora was mentioned but i believe that is not up to date anymore

In mine opinion the ubuntu forum is much better.
but then again thats just an opinion
Installing Debian from DVD might have more issues. Try using multiple CDs option You can try asking about hard drive non-detection here: [http://forums.debian.net/viewforum.php?f=17|http://forums.debian.net/viewforum.php?f=17].
