VMWare ESX and RDAC

807557Sep 18 2007 — edited Sep 19 2007
Hello,

Has anyone put a VMware ESX server in with the Sun Linux RDAC? I've not been able to find a thread on this...

If not, what is a workable strategy to attach VMWare ESX with either multipath or RDAC configuration?

Thank You,

-Jim

ESX has multipathing built-in.

To set the multipathing policy using a VI Client:

In the VI Client’s inventory panel, select the host and click the Configuration tab.

In the Hardware panel, select Storage.

Select the datastore for which you want to change the multipathing policy, and click Properties in the Details panel.

In the Extent panel, select the device for which you want to make the change, and click Manage Paths in the Extent Device panel on the right.

Select the multipathing policy in the dialog box that appears and click Done.

Thank You for the information, s-wilson. We had looked at that (and indeed after reading your post we went ahead and implemented the ESX-controlled multipath and it looks great).

There is a second ESX server we will be setting up in another week or so, we are going to try the RDAC on that...the ESX multipath is only working if both HBAA and HBAB are pointing to the same storage-controller...we were hoping to be able to RDAC them across both storage controllers to add that extra protection.

For reference, this is an IBM HS21 bladeserver with Qlogic HBA's running to a FLX380.

Regards,

-Jim
