Can .pack files be deleted?

Hello,

I have searched all Java related forums but could not find an answer to this: can .PACK files be deleted from a JRE installation that is used for a specific application only and is not supposed to be updated?

At any rate, should not those .PACK files be deleted by the JRE installer itself?

They seem to be Pack200 archives containing the same stuff (e.g. rt.jar) that the <jrehome>/lib folder also contains....

They take up a fair amount of disk space, so it would be good to know why are they still there after the JRE installation is terminated.

Someone please shed some light.

TIA
