          I'm using Oracle 10.2.0.4.0

          In my version, I would use the statement:
          SQL>alter table employees modify department_id number(2);

          Table altered.

          SQL>
          If I add the column keyword back in I get:
          SQL>alter table employees modify column  department_id number(2);
          ALTER TABLE EMPLOYEES MODIFY COLUMN  DEPARTMENT_ID NUMBER(2)
                                                             *

              I'm not sure what compels you to post identical answers already present in a thread hours later (you seem to do this frequently). Instead of wasting your time, and others, perhaps you could focus on actually providing useful content (take 10 minutes and answer an unanswered question instead of answering 10 already answered questions).

              Just a suggestion for your own benefit as well as others.
