I had what I thought was a simple question to the OpenOffice community http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=38815, I wanted to treat the Base "odb" file as if it was an Access "mdb" file and connect to it using "some" driver such as ODBC only on a Linux environment. I expected some instructions as to how to set this up, after all on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenOffice.org) it states that OOo Base is supposed to be an alternative to Microsoft Access.
Apparently "Base" has some severe restrictions and very little support at least in the OpenSource community.
My goal was to have a small database file, like Microsoft's Access file "mdb" that populated with Perl scripts and that I could send to some friends who could also use or discard. I had tested out my Perl against MySQL which worked slick and I could export and send the data in that manner but my friends do not use MySQL, but might use OpenOffice as an alternative to purchasing Microsoft Office.
I would recommend revising Wikipedia's comments on Base, or making it a functional alternative to Access.
