    ASM Instance...

    840603
      Hi,

      I am new to DB, now i am working on a 4-node RAC cluster.I jus connected to ASM using ASMCMD command i am able to see the discgroup and then i have executed sqlplus and then i have connected to an instance.

      Before doing all those thing i have set my environment variables as following.

      export ORACLE_SID=+ASM1
      ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/11.2.0/grid/

      So now i am connected to database or to only ASM instance..is ASM instance and database instance or different??

      Please clarify my doubts..

      Regards
      Sunil

          Hi Sunil,

          you are not connected to a database, just to an ASM instance.
          The main difference (besides a lot others, like other processes etc.) between an ASM instance and a normal database instance is that an ASM instance does not have and need any controlfiles/datafiles/redologfiles etc.

          So all you can do with an ASM instance is manage storage.

            I am not sure, why it is poiting some other spfile, even though i mentioned instance specifically.what could be the reason?

                  How did you get the clear explanation?

                  BTW - if you don't give a path on your startup command it chooses a deafult location which is $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init.ora or spfile.ora file and tries to open it up from there.

                  Hope this helps
