Tomcat server process hangs if one of its  threads hangs on a IO process

Our web application is running on apache tomcat 6 server. It runs 10 background thread to cache some data read from files. Files were read from different file system by different threads. We observed that one of the threads started got hung due to a filer issue on one partition. The issue was entire application including other threads got hung until that affected thread resumed back. Could you explain me on whether a java process will hang even if one of its threads hang? If so, could you explain when such cases occur and is there a way to avoid such cases?
