    Monitoring StorageTek 25xx via SNMP

    Ray Van Dolson
I'd like to monitor a StorageTek 2540 via SNMP -- querying for such things as IOPS and throughput (much like the statistics you can view from within CAM).

However, it's not clear to me how to set up this monitoring. The CAM guide states in Appendix E:

"The array management software provides SNMP traps as well as an agent that can be queried."

However, I can't find any documentation on how to configure that agent (I presume it hooks into SMA?)... right now I'm searching through the various installed packages for something that looks like it might be an agent for Net-SNMP.

      Any tips?

Whoops, I see in the section immediately below where I quoted:

          >
Sun Storage Common Array Manager does not provide an SNMP agent that can be queried using SNMP ’GET’ operations. At times, the devices themselves support SNMP ’GET’ operations although all the arrays supported by the array management software at this time do not. Instead customers typically do remote scripting using the remote CLI (SSCS) or the SMI-S industry standard provider is used.
          >

So I guess it's not possible...

Anyone out there monitoring their StorageTek devices' metrics remotely via some other means?

            Hi.
For manage and monitoring StorageTek 25xx you should use CAM ( Common Array Managment).

CAM give Web Based managment interface for manage array.

For notification about any avents on Array CAM support:
            - E-mail
            - SNMP trap
            - ASR ( Automatic Service Reguest).
            All this manage via CAM.

            Regards.

I mentioned CAM in my original post, but thanks. :-) Wish there was a (simple) way to grab metrics remotely for inclusion in our NMS.

                Hi.
You can install on remote system CAM client ( CLI ).

After this you can use CLI from remote system make all administration/ monitoring task.

In case you have plan use scripts for do it, may be need enable loging to CAM for specific user without passwords.

See post: How to login using SSCS without providing a password?

                Regards.

                  Thanks, Nik.

I've reviewed the [CAM CLI documentation|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19377-01/821-0968-10/index.html], but didn't see a way to query for statistics information. Am I looking in the wrong place?

What king statistics you can get ?

                    what about
                    Synopsis
                    list -a <array-name,...> -T performance
                    list -a <array-name,...> -t array_stats | controller_stats | volume_stats [ -c A | B ] [ -h <host-name,...> ] [ -g <host-group-name,...> ] [ -v <volume-name,...> ] [ -s name | total_iops | read_percent | write_percent | total_data | avg_read_size | avg_read_rate | peak_read_rate | avg_write_size | avg_write_rate | peak_write_rate ] performance
                    Description
Shows detailed performance statistics. You can use the following options only if a single array is specified:

                    --controller, --volume, --host, and --hostgroup
I am not sure, but possible this command give absolute value of counts, not delta. So you need semself calculate differance.

                    Regards

Great! I hadn't checked Chapter 4 of the guide, only the "Monitoring" section. D'oh. Thanks for the pointer.
