The pricing functionality in core Purchasing is very basic. You can define price breaks and let the appropriate price default based on the quantity.
But a lot of times you may need to put more logic in the pricing. The pricing could change based on month of the year, based on combination of items being ordered etc. That is when the Advanced pricing comes in.
