Oracle 11g XE - Missing APEX

    mattclements
      Hello,
When installing this and going to the APEX server URL (http://127.0.0.1:8080/) I am presented with a directory index with: images, public folders and various other bits - rather than the APEX login page.

      Am I missing anything?

This has happened on both Ubuntu 10.04LTS 64-Bit and Oracle Enterprise Linux.

          Hello Matt,

you aren't calling the APEX URL, but the root URL of the XDB HTTP Server that hosts the APEX installation.
          Go to http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/ instead.

What user should I be logging into this as.

The main URL logs in with system & the password I setup, /apex/ doesn't work correctly.

Also would it not be an idea to have the same shortcut to the URL as per 10gXE?

You use the normal APEX-Workspace-Login for this. If you don't have a workspace yet, you could call http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/apex_admin first, and login as ADMIN using the password you used for setup.
You can also call the XE Administration application http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=4950 and administer everything (including APEX) from there with system & co.

Possibly this will be different in the final release, but anyhow, sometimes it's worth to change things to make a difference clear.
If you installed using a GUI (e.g. on Windows systems) the installer created shortcuts for the end user. Linux (command line) users are encouraged to read the manual. ;)
