How to configure tnsnames.ora for instant client?

    user4928701
The instant client doesn't have any tnsnames.ora or tnsping.exe. There is no "normal" client available anywhere on the oracle site, who needs this instant client which is totally unusable - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14196/network005.htm#CIHJHJGJ says to use Oracle Net Manager to configure networking for the instant client, but where to get this Oracle Net manager? It is not available separately but only with the Oracle sever installer. Why does one have to download the server in order to just use the client?

I created the directory structure network/admin and copied the tnsnames.ora into it, and also copied the tnsping.exe from elsewhere, but it fails saying some "Not message file". Can someone please help ?

Via downloads sub-section for Database software, under the See All link for your platform, you'll find the "full" Database Client install file (e.g. win32_11gR2_client.zip).

Where does it say Instant Client?

Randomly copying files across Oracle installations is obviously not supported.
Please use an appropriate install package instead. If you need admin tools, I would suggest the complete Client with the 'Administrator' install type.

However, for normal apps needing basic OCI/Net connectivity libraries and for easy deployment, Instant Client is very well suited.
