client connectivity problem

We have an 11g database which we cannot use from any client terminal.
The connection to the database itself is fine (using eg SQLPlus) and we can run the following queries without problem:
select count(*) from table1
select * from table1 where identifier =1
However, we cannot run the following (or anything more complex):
select * from table1 where identifier <=2
Any attempt just causes the client to hang, finally returning
IO Error: Socket
Vendor code 17002Error
I have tested installation of a client on a virtual server hosted in the same environment as the oracle server, and this is fine. What could be causing this problem?
