JNLP http://java.com/js/deployJava.js broken references to java.sun.com

    893280
This file is suggested to be used in HTML pages that utilize JNLP.

The references to java.sun.com that it contains are broken atm, which results in JNLP deployed applications to be unavailable.
      There are two references:

      http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/swing2d/webstart.png
Which is only the png icon (this makes the link to the JNLP app to show as broken link!)

      http://java.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?host=java.com
This one takes the user to download java if it is not installed on system.

Can you please update that file with new refs to new java home?

*For the moment I've downloaded the deployJava.js and replaced the png with a local link and the redirect link with http://java.com/inc/BrowserRedirect1.jsp?locale=en

This is clearly a bug. Best way to report bugs on Java is to report them to http://bugs.sun.com/

java.sun.com subdomain being currently offline looks clearly as bug to you? Where is the bug in that? The host is down. Its off. There are references to that host on the deployJava.js file hosted over at java.com. Those refs should be updated. And btw why would I bother sun for a java "bug"?

why would I bother sun for a java "bug"?
              (a) Because Sun (now Oracle) made it, and (b) so that it gets fixed.

And why should you bother this forum with a Java bug? This isn't a help desk or a bug database.

Well it wasn't much of a question the why would I bother sun part. You said it yourself "now oracle".

I am not really bothering anyone nor reporting. I am here to say my feelings about JNLP not working. Last time I checked this was the "official?" discussion forum about JNLP?

                a) I didn't really ask for help as I did find a solution to my problem. Thing is, with this setup, JNLP apps all over the internet don't display correctly. This looks like a relevant issue for this forum. b) And again this is not a bug!

Anyway, sorry for the bad manners, I am somewhat frustrated to see numerous of my apps not working for days and I didn't even know it as web browsers cache stuff and I found out (that newcomers have issues) only by accident. This is not the first time this specific setup gets broken. Its good to see that it is resolved now and hopefully it won't happen again.

I don't really understand most of that, but if a Javascript program provided by the vendor as part of Java leads to a URL that doesn't work, that's a bug. Either the URL or the thing it points to needs fixing.

But if you don't want it fixed, by all means don't report it.

As I said it is already fixed.

It can't be considered as a bug. Its a service that was unavailable. If the server that hosts this forum crashes and does not work for a period of time you can't say that the forum does not work due to a bug.

Actually we learned during JavaOne (during the "Meet the JDK team leads" session) that the old bug database was not really in use anymore and they have yet to put a replacement infrastructure for it. Furthermore, the way it was working before is that the issues were filtered and prioritized by the Incident team which explains why some of them were never ever fixed in 14 years: they never ever reached the programmers...

I was there too, it is not exactly accurate reference. Old bug database is still in use and will be in use until new solution/infrastructure is ready.
Procedures had been improved somewhat and now web incidents are are now more easily accessible by developers.

Yes, this is true that some web bugs may never reach appropriate engineering team and it is still possible that report will not be addressed for many other reasons.
But reporting the bug is still much more reliable and efficient way to report a bug than just mentioning it in the forum.
(there is no harm to do both)

BTW, this particular issue was due to power outage where some of the servers were temporarily not available. It should be fine now.

Ah good to have some more precision on this matter because I ended being quite disturbed by this (was it from Mark Reinhold?).
