Solaris 11 livecd Fails to complete installation properly

    887518
      Hey,
I recently downloaded the latest Solaris 11.iso file, i can boot and run the live cd fun (i am actually typing this post using solaris 11 live cd). I can also get all the way through the installation set-up. I set-up my hard drive so that Solaris was the second primary partition on the 3rd hard disk with Windows 7 as the 1st primary on the 3rd hard disk, and Oracle Linux on the other 2 hard drives. However, once i get to the actual installation it comes up with install did don't complete properly, please check the log find out the error.

I have read the log and i can see the error but i have know idea what it is referring too.

The livecd is running under the vesa driver, as the main livecd mode seems to hang at loading the desktop.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

      Regards.

It would be helpful to send the error message that you are receiving.

I just went through this myself. It works fine on Solaris 11 Express so I have no idea what the change was.

              My disk was:

              1. Windows
              2. Solaris 11 Express
              3. Fedora 14.

              Hit the error you got.

              Made the disk:

              Windows,
              Solaris
              Unused.

I don't use Fedora much anyways so ...

              Installed just fine.

Going to Install Fedora 16 and see what mischief comes up because of it.

So, your suggesting that the Linux Partition is causing the problem?

Your set-up is layed out differently to mine, so i am not really sure how that could be the issue? Oracle Solaris is the last partition on that Hardisk before the NTFS Video & Music partition. The only connection my Linux and Solaris would have is that the Grub from Linux would be booting the solaris grub.

I have installed Solaris 11 using the exact same CD on my laptop which is dual-booting with Vista no problems.

Is there a way to fix it without re-installing all OSes? I would like to install with the Gnome desktop on default as i'm not familiar with solaris command yet! I don't care if its a liveCD or text just as long as it installs properly and is installed with the Gnome Desktop.

Nope. I'm suggesting that things have changed with Solaris 11 with regards to partitioning. What used to work for me no longer works.

Linux Grub doesn't understand ZFS so can't boot it. There are/were plans to move it into Grub as an option but I have no idea if it ever was completed.

Just for grins can you temporarily remove the two Linux Hard disks leaving only the windows/Solaris hard drive? I'd be curious to know if this solves the issue.

Well i tried what you said by removing the first 2 hard drives with Linux on them, but it didn't make any difference. It still failed to complete installation after going through all the steps.

Don't know then. What happens if you run the Device Manager tool. Should show as fine. Contact support if you have a contract.

                        That doesn't help lol!

I don't have a contract with them as it is just for desktop purposes!

Unless I'm mistaken Oracles support is mainly for servers or small to large businesses which cost upwards of $1,000. Which would be silly to apply for in my situation.

If they have support for just desktop use, then i may consider it.

Can you post the contents of the /tmp/fdisk-* file that is referred to in the logged traceback message? Your disk setup is somewhat uncommon so it's possible that something there is not correct as far as fdisk is concerned.

At the prices your paying for support here you actually expect things to get fixed. :-)

Hopefully Dave's answer will produce something.

So I'm guessing that 7 means some type of Windows Partition and 191 means a Solaris 2 partition.

The numbers at the end are probably the sector numbers meaning that your partitions are Windows/Solaris/Windows again. Probably backup, repartition, install, restore.

                                Reminds me of Solaris 8.

                                  Pretty close!
                                  The partitions are these:
                                  Hard disk 1:
                                  Partition 1: Linux-MBR (legacy Grub)
                                  Partition 2: Linux Root

                                  Hard disk 2:
                                  Partition 1: Linux-LVM

Hard disk 3: (This is the intended layout of the HDD)
                                  Partition 1: 330GB: Windows 7 (NTFS)
                                  Partition 2: 250GB: Solaris 11 (ZFS)
Partition 4: 100GB: Video & Music Files (NTFS)

Is there a suspected reason why the Solaris isn't liking the layout and fails to complete.

Do you have a Linux swap partition? One thing I'm finding is if there's a Linux-swap partition (type 82 in fdisk) that comes before the Solaris2 partition, the install program tries to install Solaris 11 in the swap partition.

My solution is to disable the swap partition during the installation process. Nothing is written to swap, it's still usable as swap, and the install can proceed to the Solaris2 partition. However, I have only two hard drives, so can't verify if my hypothetical solution would work with your layout.
