Migrating Entire Server: Sun-Fire-V210, Solaris 8 Server Running CheckPoint FW R54 and BIND 8.2.2
Dear fellow SysAdmins,
I have a Sun-Fire-V210 running Solaris 8 (let's call it server1). This
server is both company's FW and BIND server running CheckPoint FW R54 and
BIND 8.2.2. I'm getting a beefed up Sun-Fire-V210 (more CPUs & RAM, let's
call it server2) to completely replace server1. Server1 is now in
production and doing its job. We do have Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) as
our Backup server. Please try and answer as many of the questions listed
1- What is the best way of total migration to replace server1 with server2?
2- Can I simply take out the HDs from server1, put them in server2 and hope everything will come up? A reminder: Server2 has more CPUs and more RAM. Won't the kernel panic when it sees the H/W has somewhat changed (same
architecture, but more horse power)?
3- If solution listed in 2 is NOT viable, can I do a complete restore from TSM backups onto server2? Won't CheckPoint FW break? Will I retain all the FW rules?
4- Can CheckPoint FW even be migrated to another server? Is it IP based, meaning do I have to give server2 the same IP as server1? How will that work?
5- What are the pitfalls I should watch for in a big migration project like
Please assist as my job depends on this (literally).
