Oracle on VMWare - can't do it because Oracle won't fully support it?

Dana NMar 20 2012 — edited Mar 23 2012
Our Data Center is virtualizing SQL Server instances with VMWare. This is the product they know and are comfortable with. They would like to virtualize Oracle instances using VMWare as well. But evidently, Oracle has not committed to supporting Oracle instances on VMWare unless the problem can be reproduced in a non-virtualized environment. Some customers seem to be interpreting this as a reason they "can't" deploy Oracle on VMWare even if they'd like to. I can't blame them for perhaps (I say this because I don't know all the facts) not wanting to learn a new VM product when they have great expertise with VMWare.

Some questions:
* How many customers are deploying Oracle on VMWare (versus Oracle's VM offering) despite the Support Issue?
* How often do people experience errors with Oracle on VMWare that can't be reproduced in a non-virtual environment?
* Anyone know of Big Name customers that have successfully deployed Oracle instances with VMWare?

My information about Oracle Support may be out of date. Or perhaps customers find the benefits of virtualizing Oracle instances using VMWare so compelling that they've ignored Oracle's suggestions / warnings on the subject?
