I was facing the same problem on Windows Server 2003 but after reading your valuable comments, my problem has been resolved.
Once again many thanks.
I could get to the sql> prompt Which i was unable to.
Now i can get to the sql prompt but still if i go through sqlplus then it is not accepting the username and password i enter.
Can you please tell me the final username and password that i need to enter if the password i set by the above method is "1234".

Sorry, my mistake. Quotes should obviously be avoided, unless you want it part of your actual password.
Reset the password this time without surrounding double qoutes.
