I am having the following issue on uek version 5.

I see the following messages in /var/log/messages

What exact version of the distribution are you using:

lsb_release -d

What is your desktop manager, e.g Gnome or KDE?

What is your system?

What is your video card?

Drm is about hardware accelerated (direct rendering) like OpenGL (3D). Depending on your video card you may have to set specific kernel parameters to work around compatibility problems.

If you have a ATI radeon video card you can try the radeon.modeset=0 or nomodeset kernel parameters.

You need to provide more info.

Thanks for quick response. It again crashed while typing the command to get the output you requested. Had to reboot the server again.

[root@linux1 ~]# lsb_release -d
Description: Enterprise Linux Enterprise Linux Server release 5.8 (Carthage)
[root@linux1 ~]#

What is your desktop manager, e.g Gnome or KDE?
I believe it is Gnome. I have all xorg rpms installed.

What is your system?
32 bit
[root@linux1 ~]# uname -a
Linux linux1 2.6.32-300.11.1.el5uek #1 SMP Wed Mar 7 09:40:59 EST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[root@linux1 ~]#

What is your video card?
Not sure how to check this. can you help with some commands to chekc this?

Drm is about hardware accelerated (direct rendering) like OpenGL (3D). Depending on your video card you may have to set specific kernel parameters to work around compatibility problems.

Is there a link or documnet to understand what need to be set?

If you have a ATI radeon video card you can try the radeon.modeset=0 or nomodeset kernel parameters.

Enterprise Linux is not designed for desktops or laptops.

You can try to add "i915.modeset=0" to your kernel parameter line to disable DRM and see it it helps. You can add the parameter during the system boot menu or editing /etc/grub.conf

Did that... i915.modeset=0 in grub.conf file. It crashed again few minutes ago. The screen just disappears and dmesg is showing the same errors again.

Did add it to the correct kernel parameter line and restarted the system after the change?

I think so. The lines at the end of etc/grub.conf file looks like this now

initrd /initrd-2.6.32-200.13.1.el5uek.img
title Oracle Linux Server-base (2.6.18-274.el5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-274.el5 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-274.el5.img
i915.modeset=0

Added that last line. Do I need double quotes or something? Any other file I need to change?

You have not done it correctly, see below:

kernel /vmlinuz ..... rhgb quiet i915.modeset=0

Put it a the end of your current kernel line, which is Oracle Linux 2.6.32 by default, or put it on every kernel line if you like.

Then restart the system and try again.

ok from the question you posted, it looks like I might have done it wrong. Sorry I am not a Linux person. Here is the entire file grub.conf

Can you tell me where I should add that parameter?

What is the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

I suggest to change the following part of your xorg.conf file:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "intel"
Option "Shadow" "True"
Option "DRI" "false"
EndSection

On some implementations it may help to add "i915.semaphores=1" kernel parameter.
