How to use javaws on Unix

    844763
Hello everyone, I'm trying to launch javaws from a Unix system, like this:

      javaws url_to_jnlp

From windows it works just fine (it does ask me to trust the application as the signing certificate is a self generated one).
      From unix it simply prints:

Java Web Start splash screen process exiting .....
Splash: X11 connection failed: No such file or directory

Which is to be expected I guess, but I'd have guessed that it'd not just stop at it...

I've looked the web, it's often said that javaws can be used on nix platforms from command line, therefore it must be me doing something wrong...
Can anyone point my mistake out to me?
      Thanks a lot!

Yes, but only when an X11 instance is also running. Java Web Start is, as the name indicates, intended to be started from the web, in other words through a browser.

But now I actually demand that javaws also works through lynx, so I agree it shouldn't just fail when the splash screen cannot be displayed. Not much to be done about it though, I fear.
