MapViewer 12: removing SVG as a map output format

Hi,
For MapViewer 12 (the next major release of mapViewer), we plan to remove SVG as one of the server-side map output formats. To be more specific, currently when you send an XML map request to mapViewer server, you can specify the file format for the generated map 'image', such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, PDF and SVG (and SVG_TINY). Given that the SVG (and SVG_TINY) format has not been updated for a while, we are thinking of removing SVG and SVG_TINY as the supported format when using the XML map request.

If you are currently dependent on this functionality (using MapViewer to generate SVG-formatted maps on the server-side), please let us know asap so we can gauge the impact and work with you on a possible migration plan.

Note that we are not de-supporting SVG in general, just not supporting server-side SVG rendering any more. There are a number of SVG related enhancements in other areas however, for instance you can now use any SVG file as a Marker style, and there will also be a much enhanced client side SVG mapping API (as part of our completely revamped Oracle Maps v2 JavaScript map API).

thanks

This would depend on the release date. We have an application that our major client has used for a number of years which uses the SVG base maps only. We would like to migrate it to use oracle maps, we would need a time scale to present to our client so that they can decide how much to invest. The application is due for a revamp, given that Adobe no longer support the plugin it would make sense to move away from it, especially for cross browser and next gen windows support.

The next major feature release (12c) is about one year out. Note however the server-side SVG map formats will continue to exist in patch releases such as versions 11.1.1.* in the foreseeable future, so that should give you even more time to update your app.

    thanks
