Is 32bit JDBC Driver Upgrade to 64bit Recommended?

I am curious whether anyone has experienced any issues using 32bit JDBC drivers to access an Oracle 11g 64bit database? We have just upgraded a development database to 11g 64bit and have alot of legacy applications, servlets, etc. which were developed and deployed using 32bit JDBC drivers. Ultimately, we would like to recompile them to use 64bit drivers, but we would prefer upgrading and deploying a 64bit production database first. From what I have read, the 64bit JDBC drivers are backward compatable for JDK 1.5 and later, but will continued use of 32bit JDBC drivers encounter degraded performance? Thanks for any thoughts, recommendations, and lessons learned.
