We are facing some difficulties with customers for which the browser has been set to use automatic configuration script regrading the internet connection.
Java web start is by default set to use the web browser settings.
In this case the application cannot be downloaded at all. A understandable message (for the end user) about a time out connection bla bla .. appears that just involves some confusion and frustration to our users and of course for us too.
The only workaround we have found so far is to ask them to change manually the java web start network settings by switching from the option "use browser settings" to the option "Use automatic configuration script" and to copy/paste the path and name of the script indicated within their web browser to this field. At this condition that works...
Is there any other more comfortable solution?
Thanks in advance
Not really. Deployment has always been the weak part of the platform. Oracle is making some steps with JavaFX which will hopefully make their way into "regular Java" as well.
Of course adding Internet Explorer into the mix only makes it worse.
