Please make sure of the following things:
+ Were the MOS credentials were set?
+ Was the Refresh From My Oracle Support job running fine with out issues?
+ Was the Software Library configured?
The above are mandatory tasks for running the Check Updates.
If all the above set and still gives the error, please provide the screen shot and the job output with the errors tracked, that would help us to troubleshoot the cause.
I had a similar issue, Navigated to Self Update page, the link below Status Mode shows RED.
What does it mean?
That confirms that there is some issue with your MOS job that executes regularly.
Bring your mouse on to the error icon, it would give you the message.
Possible cause would be the MOS credentials not set, verify and then re-try it should go fine.

It looks the host is not configured to use DNS or NIS for host name resolution; hence the need for the entries in the /etc/hosts file. Can you use nslookup to obtain an ip address of a host whose name is not in the /etc/hosts files?
you put me in the right track. Thanks. I had to edit my /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file
