startup
ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/initora11g.ora'

Unfortunately I can not find initora11g.ora

[oracle@localhost db_1] cd dbs
[oracle@localhost dbs] ls
hc_orcl.dat init.ora lkORCL orapworcl spfileorcl.ora

so create pfile from spfile='/home//oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/spfileora11.ora will not work
in oratab also - it showed sid as orcl but I changed into <ora11g>

I have set oracle_sid = ora11g in .bash_profile as well

seems that you have corrupted parameter file .
did one try to modify it ??

if you have take Rman backup why you don't restore it ?

Did you actually create a database named db11g via DBCA ? http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10897/install.htm#ADMQS023

Simply changing the SID in /etc/oratab and setting ORACLE_SID will not work. If you have not yet created a database named ora11g, you will have to do so before you can start it up

The link you provided -also says

"Unless you specified that only the Oracle Database software should be installed, Oracle Universal Installer automatically runs Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) after software installation is complete. DBCA then creates a database using the information you provided. If you do not create a starter database and later want to create one, or to create additional databases, use DBCA."

My case, I provided the information - sid, global database, oracle_base etc..then runInstaller and select the button for creating database ... which is supposed to install software and database (automatic dbca). I am crating this database from scratch. The default oracle_sid is orcl but in my case it is ora11g ..

AFAIK, dbca does NOT utilize any external data source while creating a new database.
ALL required details entered only are via GUI form.

However it gave me in the GUI my oracl_sid=ora11g and global databasse.ora11g.localhost

    and oracle_base and oracle_home parameters

however, I don't see initora11g.ora in the following directory: /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs

    [oracle@localhost dbs]$ ls
    hc_orcl.dat init.ora lkORCL orapworcl spfileorcl.ora

We only have your claim that above is true.
FWIW - ORACL_SID=ORA11G is 100% meaningless to any Oracle RDBMS installation

    and oracle_base and oracle_home parameters

however, I don't see initora11g.ora in the following directory: /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs

    [oracle@localhost dbs]$ ls
    hc_orcl.dat init.ora lkORCL orapworcl spfileorcl.ora
above is VERY helpful & indicates that an instance named "ORCL" was created

use OS file search to locate a file named "alert_ORCL.LOG"

if this file exists, post the last 150 or so lines from it back here.

At this point, I decided to install from the scratch in new environment OEL 5.5 - I will keep update if there is any problem and issues. Obviously, I am relearning few things here which is good.
