    ASM and data access performace

I have simple question. When we use ASM we use it for mirroring data in order to create backup disk groups so we can have redundancy. However we also have performance increase in databse performance. Can someone tell me what are all performance benefits of using ASM when it comes to database transactions (insert, update, delete, select). Does data striping and load balancing on different disks give in this cases performace increase. I am just a beginer so I thought to get some starting insformation here so I could investigate later.
      Thx to all in advance.
