a data source is just a name for your connection information to the relational database and essbase which your planning application will use, I usually keep the datasource name the same as the application name so not to get confused.
Database platform is the type of database e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, server name is the host name for the relational database, database is the relational database name, I think the rest should be pretty obvious but if you want more detailed information have a read of http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/hp_admin_11122/app_dsc.html
So when we go in planning to create datasource, we should already have database and database user specified right?
