INS-40922 Invalid Scan Name - Unresolvable to IP address

Hi

During grind (Latest version) installation on Oracle Linux 5.7 I am getting the subject error, the /etc/hosts file contains the following entries on both nodes ( I am not running DNS) :

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
# Public
192.168.2.101 rac1.localdomain rac1
192.168.2.102 rac2.localdomain rac2
# Private
192.168.0.101 rac1-priv.localdomain rac1-priv
192.168.0.102 rac2-priv.localdomain rac2-priv
# Virtual
192.168.2.111 rac1-vip.localdomain rac1-vip
192.168.2.112 rac2-vip.localdomain rac2-vip
# SCAN
192.168.2.201 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan
192.168.2.202 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan
192.168.2.203 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan

The IP addresses for rac-scan are not attached to any network adapter therefore are not resolvable, its a test setup just to check out the grid infrastructure, I have setup the nodes on vmware workstation.

Should I add another adaptor, one each on both nodes, and assign the rac-scan ips to them ?

Please help me fix it.
thx

    Hello,
i don`t think you need a other adapter for the scan. The Installer checks your scan is setup correct, which means it should not apear in your hosts file. SCAN Adapter must be in a simple setup configured in the DNS not in the hosts.
In your setup the host cannot resolve to a second ip address, because it search from the first line of your hosts to the first finding. In this case never a second IP can be resolved.
If you want this setup i suggest to setup a small named name server to do this for you.

    Thanks Peter for your response.

I have now setup DNS on both nodes as master and slave, but I am still getting the same error, here is the output of the dig command on rac-scan

    [oracle@rac1 grid]$ dig @192.168.2.101 rac-scan.localdomain

    ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-20.P1.el5_8.5 <<>> @192.168.2.101 rac-scan.localdomain

    Hello,
your DNS needs to resolve your A Record to 3 IP Adresses in the reverse lookup (in your example).

Maybe i am wrong but i did not find one of your SCAN IP`s in your Output ?

    #192.168.2.201 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan
    #192.168.2.202 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan
    #192.168.2.203 rac-scan.localdomain rac-scan

The Hosts File seem correct (for this node) also be sure you have the same configuration on both nodes.

    Sample:
    [root@server1 ~]# dig scan1.local

    ; <<>> DiG 9.3.6-P1-RedHat-9.3.6-16.P1.el5 <<>> scan1.local
    ;; global options: printcmd

    ;; ANSWER SECTION:

    Hi Peter,
thanks for pointing out the problem with dig outcome which I have fixed now and here are the new results:

    Hello,
can you check your oraInventory Logfiles? Look for the *.err File and the log file. They have may more Information about details of your error.

Also check your Nameresolution if the Reverse Lookup is correct. Means check hostname to ip (what you have done already) and ip to hostname resolution.

    regards

    Hi Peter
The problem was with the name in the scan name box on the installer which by default is scan-cluster when I changed it to rac-scan it went through ( my mistake ).

However I have a new problem now may be I should open a new thread for that ?
The problem is the high memory usage by the oracle installer which eats up too much memory which freezes my VM and I don't have enough RAM to allocate more, so what I am looking for is to limit the Installer to a specific memory size usage.

Do you have any idea how can I do that, the installer is using Java and it runs so many JREs in a single process and I have no clue how to limit it to a max memory size.

    Thanks
    Rgds.

    Hi,

Please ensure that none of IPs in SCAN is used. In other words SCAN VIPs should be unused and pinged. Also SCAN should not be defined in /etc/hosts
