The check-out/check-in is only needed/used if the workspace fiolder is set to have manual versioning. Edit-in-place is only availoable via IE and it will require a webDAV access point to be created behind the scenes - IE does this for you. None of the other browsers offer this facility.
If check-out/in is greyed out then editing should not be affected by this issue as the versioning is not set. Can you describe the steps you used to hit the problem as it is a bit unclear the process you used.
That make sense, i use the Mozila as the excel sheets are not opening when i use IE. when i open a file in Mozila and save the changes i get the message that the file is read-only.
I tried with a word document, i clicked to open and could edit and save in IE!
however i can not open the Excel documents in IE browser. that could the reason?
any idea why i can not open the files?
The edit in place is a microsoft feature and if it wrks with wWord it should also work with Excel - I cannot think of a reason it would not be the same.
