    EBS Suite Backup Question

    976810
Following up to the post Re: Oracle EBS 11.5.9 and Database 9i which was answered by Hussein Sawwan this is a follow up since we are going to try to implement was what suggested by Hussein and before we do that we want to take a complete backup for the filesystem which is 200GB -- actual filesystem size 270GB and utilized only 200GB

This is what we are doing for backup

      1) Shutdown the Application
      2) Shutdown the Database
      3) Application and Database reside on the same server under the filesystem /oracle => AIX 5.3 ML 00
      4) filesystem /oracle is mounted
      4) Take a cold backup on tape /usr/sbin/backup -f'/dev/rmt0' -'0' /oracle

      Executing the command

Before command completion, additional instructions may appear below.

Command: running stdout: yes stderr: no

      -------------------
Command: failed stdout: yes stderr: no

      I killed the backup process.

#1 As you can see above AIX 5.3 ML 00 gives the warning that filesystem has to be unmounted. Could someone confirm this from their past experience that it has be umounted ?

#2 and backup says It should be finished in 19335:05. that is 200GB will take 19,335 hours ?? which is 805 days ?? then it became *3716* hours which is 154 days ?

#3 or should I try with tar command
      tar -cvf - /oracle | gzip > bkp_29Nov12_b4devpatchset.tgz

#4 or go for the whole volume group which has the filesystem /oracle
      /usr/bin/savevg -if /dev/rmt0 oraclevg

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I would recommend the tar command, it should be the fastest and the safest.

Thanks for the reply. I will try tar.

You do not need to unmount the filesystem, just make sure all the services are down. If you stop the services, you could unmount then mount and take the backup then (before brining up the services again).

              Thanks,
              Hussein

                To complete where I left:

after shutting down the Database and Application run the command

                # ps -ef | grep <<username_of_oracle_application>>

if any reports are running in the background kill it

                # kill -9 <<id_of_the_process>>

Let us take a fast cold backup of Oracle EBS on AIX 5.3 TL 00
                tar -cvf - /oracle | gzip > oracle_ebs_backup.tgz

so, the 200GB filesystem /oracle took around 3 hours for the backup
a tar of 145 GB was created which was zipped into 20GB

                On the Target Server

                1. Should have the same Operating System with all the oracle pre-requisites
                2. Create the same volume group and filesystems as the source
                3. copy the file oracle_ebs_backup.tgz on the target
                4. gunzip oracle_ebs_backup.tgz which will give you oracle_ebs_backup.tar
                5. untar the files to the same filesystem by running the command # tar -xvf oracle_ebs_backup.tgz -C /oracle

                6. The IP address and Hostname should be same as the source if you want to run it without any post-clone scripts

Question: Do I need to relink the binaries and have to perform any other things like control file to startup the EBS * ?*

I have searched on google & OTN and found people have written many different things, so I am planning this thread will have it in an organised way and clear way, short and briefly.

                Thanks

If you are not running postclone or AutoConfig, then you need to relink executable files.

How to relink an Applications Installation of Release 11i and Release 12 [ID 356878.1]
How to Relink Oracle Database Software on UNIX [ID 131321.1]

Make Asynchronous I/O available on system, following the next steps to set it up:
                    1. Log in as root
                    2. Type:
                    mkdev -l aio0
This command attempts to verify that Asynchronous I/O services are running (available on system), if not, they are started.
                    3. To ensure it is configured at each system restart :
                    a. Type: smit aio
                    b. Select the menu item "Change/Show Characteristics of Asynchronous I/O"
                    c. Change the field "STATE to be configured at system restart" from DEFINED to AVAILABLE.

or just execute the next command and it will do the same as the previous a, b and c steps:
                    chdev -l aio0 -a autoconfig='available'

which should return the message "aio0 changed".

Step 3 (either of the two ways) will toggle the state to be configured at system restart to be available, making asynchronous I/O available with each system reboot.

Either will work, just make sure you reboot the machine and try to bring the database up again. You can start the database using "addbctl.sh start" or from sqlplus (connect as sysdba and issue "startup").

Hussein or anyone , could you please point to document / link / or post steps for the following,

After the cold backup and restore , everything is working fine, provided I keep the same IP address and Hostname. But since the production already has the same IP and hostname I cannot have the backup/standby server up and running all the time in the network as there will be conflict between production and this test/development.

What if I want to change the Hostname, IP address of the server, what are the steps to follow to ensure the Database and Application starts up.

                          Appreciate your feedback.

                                  Hello

                                  I followed the instructions mentioned

How to change hostname for E-Business Suite Release 12 on single node [ID 1277556.1]

The concept was to take a coldbackup and restore it on a test server called standby
but since the production and standby cannot run at the same time because of same hostname + ip address, i thought of changing the hostname of standby server to STANDBY and changing the config in the oracle, however, doesn't seem to be an easy task.

                                  But I got these errors:
