    11gR2 RAC Patch bundle - Patching Sequence

    User374733
      Platform: Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit EE.
      Database: 11.2.0.3 RAC
      Requirement: Apply "Oracle® Database Server Version 11.2.0.3 Patch 2(13555974)"

      Environment
      =============
      1) We have 2-node RAC environment.
      2) 2 ORACLE_HOMEs in each node; i.e Grid_Home & RDBMS_ORACLE_HOME.
      Note: 3 databases with name TEST, DEV, UAT are running in this cluster and all the 3 database are using "SAME" RDBMS_ORACLE_HOME.

      Can anyone suggest what will be the sequence of applying patch? Can this patch still apply as rolling upgrade or it will require downtime?

          Section 3.3.3 of patch README says that this a rolling patch upgrade:
          - if each cluster node has its own (i.e. not shared) GRID_HOME and ORACLE_HOME just follow section 3.3.3.
          - if GRID_HOME and/or ORACLE_HOME are shared by the 2 cluster nodes you cannot do a rolling upgrade.

            Thanks Forstmann,

            The ORACLE_HOME's are not shared between "cluster nodes". The RDBMS_ORACLE_HOME is being shared by 3 databases. For that I assume that patching in a rolling manner does not seems practical.

              I don't understand the difference between ORACLE_HOME and RDBMS_ORACLE_HOME in your case.

              ORACLE_HOME is the generic name for directory tree where Oracle Database executables are installed.

              If ORACLE_HOME is shared between your 2 cluster nodes you cannot use rolling upgrade. Here sharing means sharing by cluster nodes and not by databases: if ORACLE_HOME is only shared by some databases on same cluster node and if ORACLE_HOME is not shared by different cluster nodes then you can use rolling upgrade.
