Can RAC Cluster more than databases

    Jimbo
Can RAC cluster more than purely databases ( or more precisely database instances ) ?

I recall seeing articles on deploying products such as Oracle Applications Server and non Oracle applications using RAC but to my mind that does not make sense, as I thought this product was only for databases. My understanding is that Oracle Clusterware is Oracle's clustering solution and Oracle RAC sits on top of that solution to provide clustering deployment of Oracle Databases only ?

Can Oracle Clusterware be used to deploy non Oracle applications ( i.e. is it a general clustering solution ) ?

If it is only for databases then what is the norm for clustering a server that holds my 3rd party application and my Oracle database ( after all from a total availability perspective there is little point clustering the database and not the application ). Surely it is not a case of RAC for the database and 3rd party clustering ( eg server vendor specific such as Sun Cluster, IBM HACMP ) for the application ?

      any thoughts greatly appreciated,
      Jim

          Yes.

RAC is an Oracle database option that allows multiple database instances to work in active/active mode for a single database.

          Yes. See http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16794/crschp.htm#CHDGHGJA .

            Hi Jimbo,
Can Oracle Clusterware be used to deploy non Oracle applications
Yes. There is a good video (http://www.dsvolk.ru/oracle/racdd4d/demos/video/clusterware/clusterware_viewlet_swf.html) about how to protect non Oracle solutions by using Oracle Clusterware (in video, my fried Igor Melnikov protects the Apache server).

            Best regards,
            Gennady

              Hello Jimbo

Exactly. As the others experts here said, Oracle Real Application Clusters is a cluster solution. Although not only for Oracle Database, but for another Oracle produtcs as well. Hyperion Cluster, OSB (Oracle Service Bus) and Weblogic App Server are some examples to follow. (look the links below)

              http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/weblogic/index-086651.html

              http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/service-bus/overview/osb-wp-ha-final-draft-134330.pdf

              http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/clusterware/overview/epm-hss-high-avail-windows-whitepap-131987.pdf

You can also use Oracle RAC to made a Shared File System solution (eg: ACFS).

              Hope have helped
