PreparedStatment pstmt = conn.prepareStatement("my updated query");
int rowsupdated = pstmt.executeUpdate();
rowsupdated = no of rows updated by the statement executed by this prepared statement.
Another way to do this - use SQL%RowCount variable. It will tell you the number of rows affected by the last SQL statement.
set column_name = 'Value';
dbms_output.put_line('Rows updated: ' || To_char(SQL%RowCount));
