hi at all!
i tried to install solaris 11 x64 with gui on my virtualbox on windows xp.
when i install http://download.oracle.com/otn/solaris/11_1/sol-11_1-text-x86.iso (link from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html) i does only install a version of solaris without a gui. after installation, i boots to a console. at this console, i can't log in as a root. i only get the message "Roles can not login directly"... why that???
is there a dvd iso image downloadable on http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/downloads/index.html that contains an installer that installs a gui ???
i seems the live dvd iso for x86 contains only a live system, but not an installer...? (http://download.oracle.com/otn/solaris/11_1/sol-11_1-live-x86.iso)
thanks for feedback.
best regards, jan marti
now i have a second problem: because i can't login as a root on the console (on my installed solaris 11 x86 on virtualbox) i can't shutdown the system with the commands "shutdown" or "halt"...
*!!! EDIT: problem is solved !!!*
(I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing.)

The download page states:
Oracle Solaris 11.1 Live Media for x86
The Live Media provides administrators with an opportunity to explore the Oracle Solaris 11.1 environment without installing it on a system. The system boots off the media directly allowing administrators to start the installer should they choose to install it to a system.
There is a link to a document right below the download link:
In the 5th paragraph it states: The Live Media is not intended for long-term use. For example, any changes that you make to the system are lost when the system is shut down. Therefore, the next logical step is to install Oracle Solaris on the system, which the Live Media makes easy by placing an Install Oracle Solaris icon right on the desktop. But before we head down that road, let's step back a bit and consider the installation options.
Right below that paragraph is an entire section about installing in VirtualBox.
