Java 7u10 unusable after installation on new Macintosh OS X 10.8.2 system

Currently Being Moderated
After creating a freshly installed OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) installation I am unable to launch any Swing/AWT applications.

The clean OS X installation is done as a VMWare Fusion (v5.0.2) virtual machine on a MacBook Pro (Mid 2009).

To reproduce:

1. Install a OS X Mountain Lion as a "fresh" install
2. Apply Apple Software Update
3. Install latest Oracle Java JRE (1.7u10)
4. Attempt to open the Java Preferences Pane (or any other Swing/AWT application)

A "Problem Report for Java Control Panel" dialog is presented and the error is as follows (edited for posting length restrictions):

We see the exact same error running a bundled jre7 in our install4j product-installer, also in a vmware environment, when running native there is no problem at all.

I have seen notices about the same issue on the VMWare forums as well.

    Date: 19. feb. 2013.

I have similar JAVA crash experience, my case is:

    HOST machine:
    - Apple Mac Pro (Mid 2010) Dual Xeon CPU 2,4 GHz. 8 GB Ram.
    - Mac OS X 10.8.2
    - All up-to-date updates installed, date now: 19 feb 2013)
    - Mac OS X Firewall disabled.
    - VMware Fusion 5.0.2 (complete up-to-date, date now 19. feb 2013)

    GUEST machine:
    - Virtual Computer configurated with 2 CPU Cores and 2 GB Ram)
    - VMware Machine Setting /Display/Accel. 3D Graphics: OFF.
    - Mac OS X 10.8.2. All up-to-date updates installed, date now: 19 feb 2013
    - Installed from official DMG 10.8.2 image file in VMware Fusion 5.0.2
    - Mac OS X Firewall disabled.
    - VM tools 5.0.2 installed
    - Firefox 18.0.2 web browser installed
    - Safari 6.0.2 web browser installed
    - Oracle JAVA 7.0 Update 13 installed (from: www.java.com)

    When opening System Prefences.
    Then clicking "JAVA preference icon"
Then JAVA prefences wont ever show up,
    it craches every time.

A dialog windows comes up saying:

"Java Control Panel quit unexpectedly while using the libjvm.dylib plug-in.
Click Reopen to open the application again.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."

Clicking the Report button then comes a lot of lines like:

Any progress from the Oracle side on this issue? Has anyone actually submitted a bug report?

The VMware Communities forum is also tracking this issue, but it looks like it's entirely on the Oracle-side.

Look it up and if not - go ahead. Otherwise it stays "someone else's responsibility".

Note: you're not talking to Oracle here.
