I have done all of above 3 already, none works.... It was a simple task in the older versions (10g - 11g) but its giving me a headache in 11gR2 ...... I have even created the new version in the Webconsole from Sandbox > application instance > and customize form... still no use even if it shows 64 length still it doesn't reconcile..... :(
Its just that as soon as i save the new form it reverts back to the default field length.
1- Create new version.
2- save this version.
3- change the field length of department from 40 to 64.
4- save from the main window (even if don't save at this point the result is same)
5- make version active.
6- value is back to default.
Ok… for the record,
I had to do it the hard way.
A – In Design Console

2- Delete the Department from AD User Resource Object.
3- Create new version of the form UD_ADUSER form.
4- Delete the Department field from the same form.
B- In Backend Database
1- Alter Table UD_ADUSER and Drop the Department Column.
C- Back to Design Console
1- Create new version of the UD_ADUSER form.
2- Add column Department with Length 64.
3- Add the Department in the AD User Resource Object and press the “Create Reconciliation Profile” Button.
4- Map the Department in the AD User Process Definition to UD_ADUSER_DEPARTMENT.
5- Activate this form (created in point 1 above).
D- In the Webconsole sysadmin URL
