Can you point me to some backups best practices for very large databases?

Have you looked at the [http://docs.oracle.com/cd/NOSQL/html/AdminGuide/Oracle-NoSQLDB-Admin.pdf] ?

Yes, but would snapshots work for 50TB databases?
Is there an incremental backup capability?

Have you considered that replication also provides a form of backup?

The snapshots are just file system links. Presumably the 50TB is spread across multiple shards based on your performance requirements.

Given that Cassandra offers incremental backups in addition to link based snapshots
what are your thoughts on this incremental capability?

Incremental backups are not currently supported in NoSQL DB, as I think you know. The fact that Cassandra supports incremental backups is not in itself a reason we should make this a high priority feature for a future release. If you can describe more about how you would use this feature, it would help us to prioritize. For example:

    - are you going to backup your entire data set?
    - how large is it?
    - on what media?
    - what replication factor are you using (the default is 3) and why is replication insufficient as a backup?

    Thanks,

    - are you going to backup your entire data set?
    Yes

    - how large is it?
    Up to 300 TB

    - on what media?
    Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape

    - what replication factor are you using (the default is 3) and why is replication insufficient as a backup?
    Replication factor of 3.
Backups have to be stored to tape and then moved offsite.

    Hi Aris,

So it's a pretty standard backup procedure that you're talking about. That makes sense.

How many shards do you have (i.e. how is the 300TB split up)?

I can understand the need for incremental backup and we have talked about it in the past.

We'd love to hear about your deployment. Feel free to email me or Ashok (charles.lamb or ashok.joshi) @ o.com if you want to discuss it.
