1. Is this true? Is there no support without our purchasing and installing additional products that we don't need or use?Let me answer that question a bit off the road: APEX Listener itself is not licensed separately, so you don't have a real support contract for "APEX Listener". There are three kinds of issues when using it: Something with APEX (=> Database support; also for non-APEX PL/SQL-usage, of course), something with the JEE container (=> Container support), or some issue with APEX Listener itself.
The Standalone Mode for APEX Listener is based on an embedded JEE container you don't have (and pay) support for.
Furthermore, it lacks a few features you might require for productive scenarios.
That's why Standalone Mode is not supported for productive use.
This does not mean that any issue with APEX Listener itself is not supported. In fact, you'll possibly be asked to reproduce a certain issue in Standalone Mode to make sure it's not a container specific issue. It just means, you won't be able to address issues specific to the embedded JEE container.
2. Is this facility a part of the Apex Listener alone or does it actually rely on some underlying engine, e.g. GlassFish?PDF Printing is not (officially) part of any current APEX Listener release at all. Despite that, I don't know of any requirement that is not listed in the Installation Guide. So, if your engine offers what's listed there, you'll probably be able to deploy APEX Listener. Tomcat for instance is known to be capable of hosting APEX Listener as well, though it is not officially supported...
