Windows 8 installed an update and now it's working. The latest JDK installs successfully.
It still doesn't work for me. I'm running a HP laptop and tried both JRE and JDK of Java 7 it doesn't work. Java came with it, and I erased it to try to reinstall it. However, I erased it and now I can't install it.
Sorry to hear it. That's the pain you have to suffer when you get a version of Windows before its first service release, stuff just doesn't work. You can always revert to Windows 7 which works splendidly.
