    Choosing Character Set

    829671
      Hi,
I am planning to migrate to 11.2.0.2.0 . My present DB version is 9.2.0.6.0 64bit on solaris 5.10 and my present character set is US7ASCII.
I want to keep the provision for non-english data too, though currently my DB is storing only English language.
oracle recommended to use unicode in 11g AL32UTF8.Does it support smart characters. what are the pros/cons. Any suggestions for other character set...kindly suggest.

      thanks.

Depends on what you mean by "smart character" - the documentation lists the capabilities of the various charactersets

            http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10729/applocaledata.htm

It is recommended that you use AL32UTF8 - one simple way would be for you to upgrade using export/import. How big is your database ? How much downtime can you afford ?
