If you are asking "can the database writer process write to multiple files concurrently", the answer is "it does asynchronous writes, so provided the operating system can do concurrent writes, that is what will happen".
When your datafiles are stored on RAID respectively ASM, it doesn't matter for performance how many datafiles your tablespace is made of.
One big datafile (we have even introduced BIGFILE TABLESPACES in 10g) is OK to have in Oracle.
The question is whether your storage & backup strategy can handle the big file - the Oracle Database for sure can, no worries on that layer.
