Use defaults if you are unsure - press the ENTER key when prompted (for defaults).
One option is to create a Linux VM on your Win 8 machine and install 11gR2 in the Linux VM - pl see my blog (linked in my profile) for detailed steps

Will look at your blog. To be honest, my install was working properly, I simply could not the installer to install ODAC_64 bit, and decided to de-install the whole thing.
As you mention win8 is not certified platform. You may try to remove Oracle software by following:

For your issue as mention here you can create linux or windows vmmachine than you can try installation on it. For linux you can use OEL linux which you can download from e-delivery site freely.
