Hello people, i am a Microsoft SQL Server user, and I recently thought of migrating to Oracle. So to give it I try I downloaded the following files :
But for the past two days I am heck stuck with making a Proper Installation !
I have swept the Internet and the Oracle Forums but there is not single tutorials on how to 'INSTALL' these products completely.(All tutorials are on on 10 XE and dont cover Dev Tools installation)
For eg. I installed Oracle 11 XE and ODAC 11.2 Release 5 (22.214.171.124.20) with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio but still the database was not connecting.A blog suggested that I should edit and place the tnsname.ora files in the correct location then I should configure the machine.config file. But Oracle says that its universal installer automatically configures the config file.
Honestly,I love tough things but its stupid the way oracle is deploying its products. Can anyone PLEASE give a step by step procedure on how to install and configure Oracle 11 XE with Visual Studio 2010.
Please dont get me wrong but this is way too outdated:

Well, the developer tool installation is pretty painless. You run the installer, give it a location to place the Oracle files, and you're pretty much done. (You'll know it's working if you go into Server Explorer and say you want to create a new data connection, and Oracle shows up as an option.) The one thing that does need doing is creating a tnsnames.ora file in the network\admin folder of where you installed the dev tools, which will tell it the names and locations of your databases. I don't use XE (we have a test Oracle instance created by our DBA), so I don't know exactly what that should look like, but take a look at this thread for some pointers: Oracle 10g XE: ORA 12154 - TNS could not not resolve connect identifier
The next part is making sure that XE is set up correctly and handling incoming connections. Unfortunately since I've never had to do it, I can't be of much help there at all. It does seem that the necessary documentation is at this link, under installation for Windows and Getting Started: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/index.htm
