        I would like to create the spfile so I do not have to pass the pfile='pfile location':

        SQL> create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora';
        create spfile from pfile='/usr/local/oracle/product/11.1.0.6/db_1/dbs/pfile.ora'
        *
        ERROR at line 1:
        ORA-32002: cannot create SPFILE already being used by the instance

        Thank you very much.
        It appears that you & Oracle disagree about reality.
        Good Luck at avoiding future errors!

          These 2 lines were removed:

          _passwordfile='EXCLUSIVE'

          Give a newb a break, huh?

            The solution should be self-evident. Create the spfile while the instance is shut down or is running from the pfile.
            export ORACL_SID=triton
            sqlplus / as sysdba
            sql> shutdown immediate
            sql> create spfile from pfile='the-pfile-you-modified-according-to-previous-instructions'
            sql> startup
            sql> show parameter spfile
            Thank you very much.

              Also your tmpfs may be too small (though I don't really know if it applies to your configuration). See http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/automatic-memory-management-11gr1.php
