Today i got the call from apps owners & they are querying about the rman backup validity ....
I want to know , till what time we can restore our database using RMAN ?
Any idea ? or any SQL query ?
does DB have archive logs enabled?
If so, you can restore to the point in time in most recent & valid REDO log file.

yes .. you are correct ..
They also want to know, how long we can go back ,
the last point in time ....
You can then "roll forward" by applying archived REDO logfiles.
so answer depends upon what has been retained.
The limit is not RMAN's; but human implementation actions.
Is there any way that we can find the last full valid available level 0 backup with archivelog .. So that i can say just 1 minute after that ...
say if available last level 0 backup completed at 01-Jan-2013 20:05:17 .... so i can say , we can restore the database back to 01-Jan-2013 20:06:00 ?
i want to know , how to find the last valid available backup with all controlfile, archivelog ... i want to know the exact time limit ...
I have rewritten the query as follows , Thank you very much for your input .....
select min(bs.completion_time) from v$backup_set bs, v$backup_piece bp where
bs.set_stamp = bp.set_stamp
AND bs.set_count = bp.set_count and bs.backup_type='D'
