problem assigning ILOM IP in sun 10g switch

I'm facing a problem assigning IP for ILOM in Sun 10g switch.
after giving commitpending I'm getting the below error,
set: unable to configure network..
if I use 255.255.255.0 or 255.0.0.0 it is working..any ideas??

Netmask 255.255.255.254 is uncorrect.
Minimum possible Netmask is: 255.255.255.252 (It's mean 4 address: Network address, gateways (host1), host2, broadcast).
Assigned IP address and gateway should be at one network.
According to the information you provided, minimum netmask for your use case is 255.255.255.240
