    instance_number not specified error

    user 777111
      Hi All,

I went through most the OTN forum links and google before i reach out here.
      Oracle 11GR2 LINUX 5.1 release
its a 3 node RAC cluster.
      ASM shared storage.

I was able to successfully create a database called TEST.
I entered the RAC related parametes in pfile and when i start up i am encountering this error.
I tried lot of options like, SPFILE on shared location .
      lower case and upper case.
tried starting it up with pfile and spfile in ASM
tried to add instance, database using srvctl.

still i keep getting the same. error. Can you please help what i am missign here?

FYI: This is a new database i am creating on this. As a standalone database its up and running with ASM storage.
But i am facing issue when i include RAC related parameters and start it up with pfile.

Below is the pfile i am pasting. pls let me know if you have any question.

How are you starting your database up? using startup command OR using srvctl?

I tried both the ways. Its not workign still.

Initially i thought its CASE sensitivity issue. Later i changed all to CAPS, but still it aint working.

I created a shared SPFILE in ASM, i pointed all my 3 init file in each ndoe to this shared SPFILE.

i tried to add SRVCTL ADD DATABASE, SRVCTL ADD INSTANCE

            Still the same issue persists...

Try removing and then adding first.
              srvctl remove instance -d test -i test1
              srvctl remove instance -d test -i test2
              srvctl remove instance -d test -i test3
              srvctl remove database -d test
              srvctl add database -d TEST -o $ORACLE_HOME
              srvctl add instance -d TEST -i TEST1 -n <node1>
              srvctl add instance -d TEST -i TEST2 -n <node2>
              srvctl add instance -d TEST -i TEST3 -n <node3>

he is copied from below website.....just copy paste from other sites....is it right way editing some others words..?

                source web site: http://arjudba.blogspot.in/2010/09/ora-29760-instancenumber-parameter-not.html

he has changed just instance names.....like below..

                Solution 02
modify the definitions in the OCR:

                srvctl remove instance -d didar -i didar1

                srvctl remove instance -d didar -i didar2

                srvctl remove database -d didar

                srvctl add database -d DIDAR -o $ORACLE_HOME

                srvctl add instance -d DIDAR -i DIDAR1 -n [node1]

                srvctl add instance -d DIDAR -i DIDAR2 -n [node2]

Sharma...how can you offer solution2 as best fit for OP issue?can you please explain...?

even though if your facing same problem contact oracle support through SR.

This is most common solution of this kind of problem. I didn't copy this. I have my own copies. This is the only way to remove and add components using srvctl. You should know this Sir.

Why are you trying to stir up trouble, when you're the one who often gives people either wrong answers or copy/pastes answers from other sources? Why don't you behave like the responsible "Sr DBA" you claim to be?

Rather then entering in a slew of parameters yourself, I recommend creating the RAC database and instances with DBCA. DBCA will add the RAC related parameters, and create the instances for you. It's much quicker, much less prone to human error, and the Oracle best practice.

Keep in mind that when the oracle executable process start as the boot process for an Oracle instance, it needs to know what to do - how much memory to allocate, where to find the control file, etc.

The default location it looks in is +$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<ORACLE_SID>.ora+ - in other words, it always look at the default pfile.

For RAC, the pfile will provide a single parameter. The spfile parameter pointing to the shared spfile on ASM.

So sanity check first. Does the pfile exist? Is the permissions correct? Does it contain a spfile parameter? Does that refer to a valid ASM location and spfile?

On node 1 - show us the contents of your database instance's pfile. Then show us what happens when you export ORACLE_SID and use sqlplus to perform an instance startup. (copy-and-paste please, using the *
                            * tags for formatting the pasted contents)

If I ever use external sources I make sure to cite them. You do not. In any case, I won't be lured into an argument by someone who probably won't be around here for very long anyway. Your behavior is unacceptable, and I think you owe everyone here an apology.

I redid everything using DBCA. It came just fine now.
I believe as someone rightly stated in this thread, its always best and better to do using DBCA as it takes care of everything basically
