Hello ,

Over the last 2 days I have been getting odd crashes in systems( different servers ) which reside on the same storage ( Netapp filer ). They always happen at the same time ( 5 mins past midnight ) I see in the alert logs messages like

Wed Mar 20 00:05:12 2013
System state dump requested by (instance=1, osid=7048 (PMON)), summary=[abnormal instance termination].
System State dumped to trace file /u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/xe/XE/trace/XE_diag_7058.trc
Dumping diagnostic data in directory=[cdmp_20130320000512], requested by (instance=1, osid=7048 (PMON)), summary=[abnormal instance termination].
Instance terminated by PMON, pid = 7048

and
PMON (ospid: 7332): terminating the instance due to error 469
Tue Mar 19 00:05:19 2013
System state dump requested by (instance=1, osid=7332 (PMON)), summary=[abnormal instance termination].

Find any ORA- error in following trace files and post
    XE_diag_7058.trc
    XE_diag_7342.trc

Thanks . No ORA- errors in the trace files though . I can see in the trace PMON trace file messages like

    Background process CKPT found dead

OS pid (from detached process) = 7360
OS pid (from process state) = 7360

Ok so pmon noticed that the checkpoint process died, and then crashed the instance. Checking processes is pmon's job, the Process MONitor. If your instance is not completing checkpoints the ability to recover and maintain things like data integrity are at risk.

So we can tell what happened, the why part is usually a bit more difficult.

Different instances, same storage, same time(s). So there are two things in common, storage and time. Are there any SAN flash copies, cloning, backup, etc. happening at that particular time frame? Are the netapp filers attached via NFS, or fibre channel?
